The joint trade unions representing the private sector agreed on Wednesday to call off their protest scheduled to take place on Saturday.
Free Trade Zone and General Services Union Convenor Anton Marcus told the Business Times that following Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's assurance to amend the budget proposals in favour of the workers they have decided to suspend the protest scheduled for Saturday.
He noted that they would be however, submitting a letter to the Premier requesting him to ensure the necessary amendments to the budget proposals be made as promised during their discussion.
FTZ workers in Katunayaka and Yakkala have staged protests against the budget proposals to amalgamate the EPF and ETF; a five day work week with an additional unpaid one hour added for each day; an increase of Rs.2500 for private sector wages be legislated; and change in worker termination period from 180 days to one year within a period of 12 months.
