A day-long Youth Peace Champion Event organised by the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka (NPC) was held on Thursday at the BMICH.
This event was supported by the United Nations Peace Building Fund and the Secretariat for Coordinating Reconciliation Mechanisms. The main purpose of the ‘Peace Champions’ event was to make recommendations for the effective implementation of Transitional Justice Peace Reconciliation in Sri Lanka with a focus on victims.
Dr. Jehan Perera, Executive Director NPC said that over the last two years more than 1500 youth have been trained on transitional justice from the 12 Sri Lankan universities and from 21 districts. More than 200 selected youth leaders have attended the ‘Peace Champions’ event.
Recommendations were made to the media on amplifying the voice for the youth; building support for transition; sustaining reconciliation; and building awareness within media and ethical and accountable conduct.
Recommendations were also made to the victims to the UN to the Government and civil society. (Quintus)
