Private sector workers mainly from the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) held a protest on Wednesday demanding an increase in wage allowance by Rs.2500 as proposed in the interim budget under the Sirisena administration. FTZ and General Services Employees Union Secretary Anton Marcus speaking with the Business Times said they had a successful protest with the participation of 1500 workers during the demonstration surrounding the FTZ and 5000 attending the rally held thereafter.The protest was held in front of the FTZ at Katunayaka at around 5.00pm on Wednesday despite employers’ efforts to disrupt it.Two unions participated at this protest namely FTZ and General Services Employees Union and the Inter Companies.(SD)
