Water bills of over 2 million household and business establishments are to be increased by 30 per cent soon, National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) sources said.

NWSDB sources said the proposal on a new water tariff has been forwarded to a Cabinet sub-committee and the new fares will be announced soon after its approval.

The board has to spend Rs. 310 per water unit as production cost and it is levying only Rs. 62 per unit from the consumer, a senior official of the NWSDB said.

Water bills of households that utilise between 16 and 20 units of water will be increased by Rs.8 while the monthly service charge will go up to Rs.320.

For usage between 26 and 30 units of water the tariff increase will be Rs.26 while the monthly service fee is Rs.600. (Bandula)
