The first intake of the ‘Naval Engineering Cadet Officers’ to Southern Maritime Institute (SMTI) was held at the Institute’s auditorium at Maradana, Colombo recently.
The first batch comprises of thirteen Cadet Officers including one woman officer.
This Navigation cadet training programme leads to a ‘Diploma in Nautical Science’ as well as the award of a Sri Lanka Merchant Shipping Secretariat Certificate of Competency. Once completed the training programme, Cadet Officers are qualified to sail as a watchkeeping officer. With further experience, education, and training, prospective student can become a Captain of a merchant ship.

In his special statement, President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that debt restructuring agreements will postpone all bilateral loan payments to foreign countries until 2028. Additionally, Sri Lanka will have until 2043 to repay these loans on concessional terms.
