Former Minister Mangala Samaraweera has pased away while receiving treatment at a private hospital for COVID-19.
Mr Samaraweera was 65 years of age at the time of his death.
Born on April 21, 1956, Mr Samaraweera first entered politics from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1983 as its cheif organizer in Matara before entering Parliament for the first time in 1989.
Mr Samaraweera held a number of ministerial portfolios in different governments over his more than three decades long career in politics.
He served as Foreign Minister (2015-2017) and then Finance Minister (2017-2019) in the Yahapalana Government. He also served as Foreign Minister from 2005-2007 in the Cabinet of then President Mahinda Rajapaksa. He also held key portfolios including as Minister of Telecommunications in the Cabinet of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga after playing a key role in bringing her government to power in 1994.
