Rainy and windy conditions are predicted to get worse throughout most of the island over the next two days due to the depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
The depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal has located 350km to the Northeast of Trincomalee and it is very likely to cross Sri Lanka by tomorrow.
According to the department's assessment, there is frequent rain or thundershowers and the sky is cloudy in several areas of the island. In some regions, heavy showers that are 100 mm or more are possible.
Strong gusty winds of about 40-50kmph can be expected at times over the Northern, Eastern, Uva, North-western, Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
The DMC has urged everyone to take appropriate safety measures to reduce the harm that brief, localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers might inflict.
The DMC further stated in the notification that anyone who is actively fishing in sea areas should stop and immediately head ashore or to a safe location.
