A three acre area of the Kerawalapitiya garbage dump had caught fire this morning with black smoke covering the vicinity of the fire, Wattala police said.
The fire had erupted in grabge dump area near the garbage recycling plant which is adjacent the Colombo - Katunayake expressway entrance near Kerawalapitiya,
The sudden fire had caused the area to be covered by smoke, and disrupted traffic in the expressway, users of the expressway said.
According to police four fire incidents including today’s incident had been reported from the dump within the past two month.
A gas company storage area in also situated near the garbage dump while within a distance two kilometers there are many factories and stores in the vicinity.
The Colombo Municipal Councils’ fire fighters units and the Sri Lanka Navy units had engaged in efforts to douse the fire and managed to reduce the surface fire but there is the risk of it erupting again.
