A group of United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarians have written to Speaker Karu Jayasuriya requesting to appoint former UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa as Opposition Leader.
The Speaker's Office said that 40 Parliamentarians had signed the letter.
The seat of Opposition Leader became vacant after Mahinda Rajapaksa who served in that position was sworn in as Prime Minister this afternoon.
Meanwhile, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had also written to the Speaker today (Nov 21) nominating UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to the vacant post.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has interdicted Colombo Fort Magistrate Kosala Senadheera.
