Irrigation Department officers said that they took steps to open all 10 sluice gates of the Parakkrama Samudraya by 2 feet last morning (29).
Once the sluice gates are opened, water is released from the tank at a speed of 2500 square feet per second. The released water is transported via the Amban Ganga to the Mahaweli River, they added.
The decision to release the sluice gates was taken owing to the water level at the Parakkrama Samudraya exceeding its spill level.
