Army soldiers timely acted to save a major split on the ‘Rajamaha’ tank bund in the Thalakiriyagama Grama Seva Division in Matale, when its south bank due to torrential rains began subsiding.
The troops after being informed by the Disaster Management Centre of Galewela, rushed to the location and started to place about 500 sandbags after hours of tiring work.
Two Officers and 24 Other Ranks carried out the task under the close supervision of engineers of the Irrigation Department and averted a major disaster.
The Acting Minister of Defence, Premitha Bandara Tennakoon visited the location and highly commended the Army's tireless efforts and their contribution.
