The National Zoological Gardens have planned to exhibit the newly acquired animals at Dehiwala zoo and Ridiyagama safari Park from Tuesday March 25 onwards.
The zoo has decided to exhibit the pair of Himalayan Brown bears and two spotted hyenas which were brought to Sri Lanka according to an animal exchange program. The animals were sent to Sri Lanka from "Capital Zoo" in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The animals which were subjected to a one month quarantine period have been paired together in their enclosures. The two bears were quarantined at Dehiwala Zoo while the hyena pair was quarantined at Ridiyagama safari park at Hambantota
The two bears are scheduled to be exhibited at Dehiwala National Zoological gardens and would be opened to the public from March 25 at 10.00 am onwards. Simultaneously the pair of spotted hyenas would be exhibited at Ridiyagama Safari park at Hambantota.
The Director General of the National Zoological Gardens, Dr Rajapaksalage Chandana Rajapaksa said that their main goal is executive conservation of rare and endangered animals.
“We hope to breed these animals and contribute to the conservation of these animals, but while we are doing that we would educate the public about the animals and pass the message on how to conserve and protect the animals” he said.
