The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has submitted a proposal to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) for a reduction in electricity tariffs, a Senior Official of the CEB told the TimesOnline.
The PUCSL has been provided with the necessary data to reduce the electricity bill and is presently being reviewed, he added.
Electricity tariffs are expected to drop by the first week of February, according to Indika Anuruddha, State Minister of Power and Energy.
State minister Anuruddha also expressed optimism that in 2024, around 600 megawatts of electricity will come from renewable sources, according to the new generating plan.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has written to the Chairman of the Electricity Board Mr. Nalinda Iangakoon, requesting the suspension of services of employees causing disruption to the uninterrupted electricity supply, which was declared an essential service on Wednesday (3) by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Ceylon Electricity Workers’ Union initiated a three-day protest campaign on January 2 against the Bill to restructure the CEB despite declaring the service as essential.
