The Sri Lanka Life Saving (SLLS) expressed concerns over recent crocodile sightings at Mount Lavinia beach.
“The Mount Lavinia Beach, often referred to as the "Golden Mile," attracts thousands of visitors daily, engaging in activities such as bathing, walking, and running along the shore”, Chief Executive Officer of SLLS and the representative International Life Saving Federation, Asanka Nanayakkara said
However, in recent years, an alarming issue has emerged crocodile sightings in the vicinity.
According to him over the three years, crocodiles have been observed sporadically, with one confirmed attack on a fisherman diver two years ago. In recent months, sightings have increased, with multiple reports each week from both local villagers and patrol-duty lifeguards.
He further added on Tuesday, several diving boats reported spotting a large crocodile near the Mount Lavinia sunken ship area, approximately 3 km offshore in front of Mount Lavinia Hotel.
“This poses a significant threat to public safety, particularly for the thousands of visitors, including children and international tourists, who frequent the beach”, he pointed out.
Therefore the organization called upon all relevant authorities to take immediate action to assess and mitigate the issue.
Meanwhile Chairman of the Marine Environment protection authority, Samantha Gunasekara told the Times Online that sighting of Saltwater Crocodiles is a natural phenomenon and people should not panic over the sightings of crocodiles in deep sea areas.
He explained that during the rainy season when the salinity of the canals which connecting to sea reduces the crocodiles move downwards towards the sea, Mr Gunasekara who is also an environmentalist explained that the salt water crocodiles can survive in sea, yet when the rains reduce they swim back into the canals.
“People do not need to panic, the crocodiles movements are natural, the crocodile attack which took place few years back was due to the fishermen trying to fish closer to the reptile, therefore people should keep their distance from the crocodiles”, he said.
