Construction of South Asia’s longest irrigation tunnel begins

Construction on South Asia's longest irrigation tunnel commenced this morning at Palugaswewa, Anuradhapura under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. 

The irrigation tunnel will be 28 kilometres long and is being built in conjunction with the Government's "Wari Saubhagya" programme to renovate 5000 irrigation tanks. 

The irrigation tunnel project is be funded by the Sri Lankan Government and the Asian Development Bank at a cost of USD 244 million.
