The Dawson Tower, built in memory of Captain William Francis Dawson., the architect of the Kandy- Colombo road is being given a facelift , after a number of years.
This Tower had been erected by those of his Regiments, after his death as he could not see his own work, when he died under strange circumstances.
The building of the Kandy-Colombo road across terrain was ordered by Governor Sir Edward Barnes named as the road builder for the British administration.
Captain Dawson was ordered to build this road to Kandy from Colombo and which took seven years., but he could not see his own work as he died in Colombo under strange circumstances on March 1832.
This is a protected Monument under the Antiquities Ordinance coming under the Archaeological department and lies at the head of the Kadugannawa pass.
