A special dengue prevention week has been initiated in the North-Western Province from today onwards tilll May 28 by the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), Community Medical Specialist of the NCDU, Dr. Indika Weerasinghe said.
The decision was taken after considering the rapid growth in dengue cases in the province, particularly in the Puttalam district.
Health authorities have stated, currently 300-400 dengue cases are being disclosed daily across the country. According to the NDCU, 5,967 dengue cases have been reported during the first 20 days of this month.
Dr. Weerasinghe urged the communities residing in the North-Western Province to be cooperative when the medical teams together with Medical Officers of Health reach their residences, offices, and schools to examine probable mosquito breeding sites.
Meanwhile, Secretary of the Government Medical Officers’ Association Dr. Haritha Aluthge said 17 per cent of the MOH areas all over the country have been announced as high-risk zones owing to dengue.
