The Election Commission has announced today that deposits for the Local Government Election will commence on March 3, 2025, and continue until March 19, 2025, at 12:00 noon.
However, deposits will not be accepted on March 13, 2025 (Poya day) , and on Saturdays and Sundays (March 8, 9, 15, and 16).
The acceptance of nominations will take place from March 17 to March 19, 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and on March 20, 2025, until 12:00 noon.
The Local Government Elections will be held to elect Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairmens, Vice-Chairmens, and Councilors for 336 councils across the country, including 28 city councils, 36 municipal councils, and 272 local councils.
However, elections will not be held in 2025 for the Kalmunai Municipal Council (Ampara District), Dehiattakandiya Regional Council, Mannar Regional Council (Mannar District), Punakari Regional Council (Kilinochchi District), and Elpitiya Regional Council (Galle District).
The election process across the country will be overseen by the Returning Officers, who are the respective District Secretaries/District Commissioners.
