A doctor attached to the Badulla Hospital who was under surveillance for 11 years has been arrested on allegations of selling narcotics and cannabis to school children, the Special Task Force (STF) said today.
The STF officials of the Passara Camp had been informed of the doctor’s actions in 2012 and after a investigation and utilizing a spy, they were able to arrest the suspect.
The STF conducted a raid near the roundabout in front of the Muthiyangana temple, while he was driving his car. He was in possession of 145 tablets which was not authorized to carry.
The suspect serves in the Badulla Hospital as a doctor and owns a pharmacy in Badulla. The drug in his Possession was a tablet sold between Rs. 30 and Rs. 80 in pharmacies but only under doctor’s prescription.
A senior STF official said the suspect had sold this tablet to drug addicts including school children at a price of Rs. 250 in separate locations.
The suspect was handed over to the Badulla Police Station for further investigation.
The raid was conducted by the STF officials of the Passara Camp including the Second Commanding Officer, Inspector D. R. M. S. Hemawamsha under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Dayaratna.
