A mysterious double murder case that went unresolved for 31 years has been resolved with a revelation about the culprits.
The breakthrough came on a tip-off from none other than the daughter that her mother was an accomplice of the crime.
Police have arrested the main suspect, a soldier by profession and now looking for the woman involved in the murders – a father and a son.
According information received the soldier had murdered the man in 1991 after marrying the victim’s second wife and a week later had murdered their son and dumped the body in a marshy land in Bolgoda.
The father killed was a resident of Hatton who had moved to Maharagama with his two sons after his first wife had divorced him.
Subsequently the man had migrated to a foreign country for employment where he had met and a woman from Moratuwa, who was also divorced, having two children from the previous marriage.
On return to the country he had built a house in Moratuwa, but returned overseas once again. On return to the country the man had found that his wife had married a solider.
The woman and the soldier had proceeded to kill the man in the house, and disposed off the body. A week later the couple had killed one of the sons as well at a hotel in Piliyandala.
The couple had made a false deed and acquired the house .
The second son of the man who was killed had joined the army and later migrated for employment .
On returned had been alerted by the daughter of the woman who had witnessed the murder of his father.
He had lodged a complaint with the police leading to the arrest of the soldier recently. He was produced at the Moratuwa Magistrate Court and currently in remand custody while a search for the woman is underway. A friend of the soldier is also in custody for the murder of the son.
