Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa states that the East Container Terminal (ECT) of the Colombo Port will not be sold or leased.
He made the assurance from his home in answer to a question posed by a journalist yesterday.
In a transcript of the PM's answer, released through his office, Mr Rajapaksa claimed that port trade unions who are currently engaged in a work-to-rule campaign over the issue must also know that it is not the current Government's policy to sell national assets.
He opined that there was no need for port workers to go for a strike on the issue and that a majority of the Cabinet was also of the view that the ECT should not be sold. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa too shared the same view, the PM remarked.
"We will not sell or lease out the ECT to anyone. It will continue to remain under our control," he noted.
