A serious environmental damage had occurred due to forest fire which had occurred at Alagalla mountain area above Badulla town, police said
The fire which sparked off around 6.00 pm yesterday had lasted for over six hours and destroyed a large portion of the forested areas.
The fire had also spread towards Badulla District secretariat's armoury situated in the same mountain and therefore police and army took priority to douse the fire before it reached the armoury.
Police said that the investigations revealed that the fire had occurred due to human activities and said that they were unable to apprehend any suspect responsible for the fire.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
