Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon was granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today.
He was in remand custody over his alleged failure to prevent the mob attack on peaceful protesters at Galle Face on May 9, 2022 Aragalaya.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura ordered his release on two surety bails of Rs. one million each and imposed an overseas travel ban on the former Police Chief.
Mr. Tennakoon had earlier been remanded until August 27 in connection with the investigation into the violent crackdown at Galle Face Green, where protesters had been staging demonstrations under the “GotaGoGama” campaign.
