Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been summoned by the Bribery Commission following a statement he made supporting MP Chamara Sampath Dissanayake who is in custody.
The former President said he was prepared to appear before Bribery Commission, but said he would not be available immediately due to the new year season and wanted another date.
The former President in a statement said, he was surprised by the swift response from the Bribery Commission to his media statement, which was issued around 6 p.m. yesterday.
According to the letter, an Assistant Director General of the Bribery Commission noted that the media statement made by the former President indicates that he has more information regarding the case and by making the statement he has got involved in the on-going investigations.
The former President has been requested to present any relevant information to substantiate his recent statements made in relation to the case filed against MP Dassanayake.
Former president Wickremesinghe claimed that MP Chamara Sampath Dassanayake withdrew the fixed deposits belonging to the Uva provincial council, over which he is now facing corruption charges, in accordance with a circular issued during his tenure as the prime minister.
