Puttalam district Parliamentarian Ali Sabri Raheem who was arrested with undeclared gold and smartphones has been released today (24) morning after being fined Rs. 7.5 million, Customs sources said.
The Ceylon Makkal Congress MP was arrested yesterday while attempting to illegally bring in 3.3 kilogrammes of gold in the form of biscuits and jewellery as well as 91 mobile phones through the VIP lounge at the Bandaranaike International Airport.
Following an inquiry conducted by the Revenue Task Force Directorate of Customs, the Parliamentarian was ordered to pay the fine while all the smuggled goods were confiscated.
According to Customs, the estimated value of the illegal gold was about Rs. 74 million while the 91 phones were estimated to be around Rs. 4.2 million.
State Minister of Finance, Shehan Semasinghe yesterday informed Parliament that an inquiry has commenced while gold and phones will be confiscated.
