An individual who spat at Public Health Inspectors (PHsI) and obstructed their duties in Atalugama was sentenced to six years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by the Panadura Magistrate's Court today (21).
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10, 000 on the individual.
The incident had occurred on December 2, 2020 when two PHIs and two assistants had gone to Atalugama in the course of their duties. There, they were allegedly obstructed from performing their duties by an individual who had tested positive for COVID-19. The individual had also spat at of one of the PHIs.
Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said police filed eight charges at the Panadura Magistrate's Court against the individual once he recovered from COVID-19. They included criminal intimidation, using criminal force against a government servant and disobeying quarantine orders.
The suspect pled guilty to all charges and accordingly, the magistrate sentenced him to six years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10, 000.
