Japan grants for Northern mine-clearing

Japan has granted around USD 450,000 (Rs. 131.4 million) to support mine-clearing in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province through Delvon Assistance for Social Harmony (DASH). This extends Japan’s aid to DASH until April 2026, marking 16 years of partnership, with total support now exceeding Rs.1,561 million.

Japan gave the grant through its "Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP)" program. The agreement was signed by Japanese Ambassador Akio Isomata and Ananda Chandrasiri from DASH.

The project will clear over 100,000 square meters of land, helping over 5,000 people,about 900 can safely resettle and 4,000 can engage in farming and other livelihoods.

Since 2010, with Japan’s help, DASH has cleared 7.9 sq. km of land, destroying thousands of mines and explosives, benefiting over 120,000 people. Japan has supported Sri Lanka’s demining efforts since 2002, with total aid of USD 48 million
