Marine Environment Protection Authority is to expand the scope of the authority and cover visual, sound pollution in beaches
The Newly appointed Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority, Samantha Gunasekara told the times online that priority would be given to conservation of marine environment.
“Currently the authority looks into waste, chemical pollution, yet now we have to expand it to radioactive matter, nuclear pollution as well. Apart from that the visual pollution and sound pollution should also be looked upon”, he added.
According to him as there was a lack of a chairman during the past six months work had been held up, therefore he would first complete the held up work.
He added apart from that there are also vacancies remaining in some of the key positions of the authority, therefore he would also take necessary actions to fill the vacancies.
Mr Gunasekara said that he plans to train authority personnel on the subject of Marine environment protection methods, as they could be deployed to carry out conservation activities to preserve marine environment.
In addition he would also train authority personnel Training on modern aspects in protecting of marine environment in Sri Lanka.
