Mass protests are expected in Colombo and other parts of the country today (9) following the declaration of August 9 as a "National Day of Protest" by a number of political parties and civil society organisations.
Protesters are calling for the immediate dissolution of Parliament and for the holding of a general election.
Security has been beefed up in Colombo ahead of the protests expected today.
On Monday (8), the Colombo Chief Magistrate's Court rejected a request made by the Cinnamon Gardens Police to issue an order banning protests organised by political parties and organisations due to be held today at the Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo.
The magistrate noted that police have the power to deal with any breach of the peace or if property damage is reported.
