Thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, North-central and Eastern provinces and in Vavuniya, Mullaitivu and Hambantota districts, the Meteorology Department warned.
Issuing an alert, the Department requested the public to avoid open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms and to seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
“Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms and do not use open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors and boats. Beware of fallen trees and power lines,” the warning said.
Fairly heavy rainfall is forecasted at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and North-Central provinces later today (22).
