The Ministry of power is to inform the Chinese authorities that they are to discontinue the stage four of Norochcholai Power Station.
Minister of Power, Dullas Alahapperuma told the Sunday Times that according to the President's manifesto ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’, the government energy policy promotes use of renewable energy; therefore the government has decided to fulfil 70 per cent of the country’s energy requirement via renewable sources of energy.
Accordingly, the government has decided to discontinue the stage four of the coal power plant in Norochcholai, Puttlam. He said that the stage four of the power plant was to add 3000 mega-watts to the national power grid.
However, the Minister pointed out that even though the stage four of the power plant is to be discontinued, two LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) power plants in Kerawalapitiya and Muthurajawela with a power capacity of 300 mega-watts per each would be added to the national power grid. He added therefore it would meet the power requirement of the country.
The government will be officially informing the Chinese authorities regarding the discontinuation of stage four of the Norocholai power plant in the coming week.
