(UPDATED) The Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando has been remanded until June 11 after being arrested by the Police for interrupting the official duties of those involved in a COVID-19 vaccination programme in the Moratumulla area.
Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the arrest was made following a complaint from the officials.
He was also charged for violating quarantine regulations.
The Mayor had allegedly issued a token for persons to be vaccinated, but officials at the Methodist Church premises declined to follow his instructions.
He entered into a heated argument with the medical officer at the centre.
The Mayor surrendered himself to the Mt Lavina police today and was thereafter produced before a magistrate.
