The Police had released five suspects on bail arrested on Sunday (December 11) for attacking a National People’s Party (NPP) rally at Weerambugedara.
Police claim the attack on the NPP rally was the result of a dispute among relatives, where a group of relatives had arrived at the rally to attack relatives attending the rally, and that a political reason by the attackers have not been revealed yet.
The rally was held on December 6 at the Mahapitiya area of Weerambugedara, organized by villagers, which was attacked causing damage to a car. Upon receiving the complaint regarding the incident, the Police began the investigation.
In the evening of Sunday, the Police arrested six suspects and two more suspects for attacking and causing injuries, whom the Police claimed to be from “both sides”. The suspects are residents of Pothuhera and Thalawatthegedera and aged between 28 and 49.
The suspects were produced to the Kurunegala Magistrate Court on Monday, after which they were released on bail, while they are to be produced to courts again on March 8, 2023. The Weerambugedara Police are conducting further investigations.
