New political alliance disassociate SLFP

News

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to withdraw from an alliance agreement reached last week and contest on its own at the upcoming Local Government elections following pressure from other parties in the alliance.

The other parties in the alliance had called the SLFP to withdraw after the Supreme Court ruling on the Fundamental Rights petitions related to the Easter Sunday  attacks in which former President Maithripala Sirisena had been found guilty.

Dullas Allhapperuma and Prof G.L.Peiris had met with the former President and called them to withdraw claiming it would be a disadvantage for the SLFP to remain in the 12 party alliance.

Accordingly, the SLFP has opted to the contest the elections under the SLFP symbol of hand in all districts,  except in Colombo and Ampara districts.

Last week the new alliance known as The Freedom People’s Alliance was launched ahead of the proposed Local Government elections.

Seven of the key parties including the SLFP signed the agreement to launch the Alliance at the SLFP Headquarters at Darley road, Colombo 10.

SLFP General secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara signed the agreement on behalf of the SLFP. The others who signed the agreement were Leader of the Nidhas Janatha Peramuna- Nalaka Godahewa, General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party – Asanka Nawaratne, General Secretary of the Uttara Lanka Sabhagaya – J. Weerasinghe, Convener of the Nidahas Janatha Sabhawa – G.L. Peiris, General Secretary of the Jana Jaya Peramuna – Anura Priyadharshana Yapa, and General Secretary of Nidhas Janatha Sandanaya – Thilanga Sumathipala.

They have decided to contest under the Helicopter symbol.
