Police made an early breakthrough into an incident of a gang claiming to be CID officials and robbing bronze Buddhist statues and cash from a residence in Pallama, Puttalam and abducting the householder, Police said.
Within 10 hours after the incident, the gang consisting of five persons and the van used for the abduction and the robbers to escape were detected.
The 67 year old man abducted had been released in Madampe before the arrests were made.
The gang broke into the house claiming they were from the CID and looking for a statue unearthed as a treasuer.
The resident claimed that he was in possession of only the Buddhist statues used at his place of worship.
The gang had searched the house and eventually left with the Buddhist statutes and cash to the value of Rs 100,000 while abducting the householder.
The gang had left claiming they were from the Peliyagoda Special Crimes Division.
The investigations were led under the directions of ASP (Anamaduwa) Saman Priyantha.
