Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa today called the government to stop the arbitrary arrests of activists at the parliament.
The comments were made following the arrest of a actress Damitha Aberatne after she joined a protest near the parliament junction yesterday
The opposition leader told that the government should immediately stop violating the basic rights of the people. He also said that Ms Abeyeratne is a well known actor, social activist who was doing a service to the people, he said.
The actress was produced before fort magistrate today and was remanded unitl September 14,2022.
Yesterday anti government protestors and activists held the protest at calling the government to stop suppression, they called the government to stop use of intimidation tactics as arresting innocent people.
The protestors clad in black and with black head bands were holding boards and posters demanding the freedom of expression. Apart from that they also were pointing out the surging cost of living issues.
.Following the protest actress Abeyaratne was arrested near the parliament junction. Police said she had been charged for of forcibly entering presidential secretariat during anti government protests.
