The Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya has ordered a probe into the possible negligence by the Police in handling the investigations into the accident involving for Speaker and Member of Parliament Ashoka Ranwala’s vehicle.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Nalinda Jayatissa told journalists that report regarding the investigation associated with this case will also be presented to the court.
Minister Dr Jayatissa made the disclosure in response to a question from journalists at the weekly post–cabinet briefing.
The Minister said that the investigation was launched in consideration of allegations made by certain individuals that policemen had failed in their responsibilities at the time of the accident.
One of the key allegations is that the Police did not move to carry out a breathalyzer test, though the family members of the victims claimed that Mr Ranwala was under the influence of liquor.
An infant and two others were injured in the accident which took place last Thursday (December 11) in Sapugaskanda.
The family claimed that the test had been carried out more than 12 hours after the accident.
