Power cuts likely to be further extended - PUCSL

News

The 3rd unit of the Lakvijaya coal power plant in Norochcholai has been shut down due to a technical fault, Public Utilities Commission (PUCSL) Chairman Janaka Ratnayake said.

Accordingly, the prevailing power cuts may need to be further extended, the PUCSL Chairman added.

The exact power cut schedule is to be communicated to the public shortly.

The daily power cuts were extended recently from 1 hour to 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Unit 2 of Norochcholai power plant was earlier shut down for maintenance. As such, only Unit 1 of the power plant is currently operational.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has informed that the Unit 3 of Norochcholai power plant has been shut down due to a steam leak, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said on Twitter.

He added that it would take between 3-5 days to repair the plant. "Fuel Power Plants will be utilized to manage the Power generation until the repair work is completed," he further stated.
