Radiation detection equipment worth approximately $500,000 (Rs. 148 million) was commissioned at the Port of Colombo’s West Container Terminal recently.
The equipment was provided by the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA)’s Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) through its Megaports Initiative.
The system is designed to detect and alert authorities to the presence of radioactive materials, supporting Sri Lanka’s national port security regulations and strengthening global supply chain security.
Senior officials from Sri Lanka Customs, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, and the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board attended the commissioning ceremony.
U.S. experts partnered with Sri Lankan counterparts to train instructors and maintenance technicians.
The U.S. and Sri Lanka have cooperated under the Megaports Initiative since 2004.
