The 24-hour token strike launched by the Locomotive Engine Operators' Union and railway guards was called off this afternoon following discussions between railway trade unions and Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge.
Unions launched the strike over several issues including the decision by the Government to recover from railway employees, any losses sustained due to operational errors during railway operations.
Unions stated that train services will return to normal by this evening.
Railway commuters faced severe inconvenience this morning as many train journeys were cancelled owing to the strike.
