Rain forecasted today

News

The current windy and showery conditions over the island are likely to persist due to the active Southwest monsoonal condition, according to the Department of Meteorology.

Occasional showers or thundershowers are predicted for Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western and Southern provinces.

There is a chance of heavy rain over 100 mm in several areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Nuwara-Eliya district, the Department said.

A few locations in Uva province, as well as in Ampara and Batticaloa districts, will experience evening or night-time showers or thundershowers.

High winds of 50-60 KMPH are foreseen in Northern, North-central, North-western, Western, Southern provinces, western slopes of central hills and in Trincomalee and Monaragala districts.

Meanwhile, the active south-west monsoonal condition will further make the sea areas surrounding the island quite choppy, added the Met. Department.

Hence, it is recommended that the fishing and naval communities exercise caution when conducting their operations in the above-water regions and were further requested to be on alert on future forecasts released by the Met. Department.

Wave heights in the sea areas off the coast, extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota, can reach up to 2.5 to 3.5 meters.

As a result, surges from sea waves could potentially occur in the nearshore water areas extending from Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Sea areas off shores extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo will experience showers or thundershowers at times.

Winds will be south-westerly in the sea areas around the island. There will be a 40-50 KMPH wind, with occasional gusts to 60-70 KMPH and turbulent waters are foreseen during thunderstorms transiently.
