The management of the Rehabilitation centre at Ridiyagama in Ambalantota currently under the Southern Provincial Council is to be taken over by the central government, the Cabinet has decided.
The Centre set up under the Social Service Department in 1975 was handed over to the Southern Provincial Council in 1990.
The Centre currently holds 576 persons though it only has the facility to accommodate 450 persons.
The decision has been taken considering that persons from different locations in the country are directed to the centre on court orders and the need to set up a National Centre was required.
The Cabinet proposal was submitted by Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
