Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today ordered Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Badulla District MP Chaminda Wijesiri to leave the chambers after he attempted to assault Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Gampaha District MP Nimal Lanza.
The Speaker ordered MP Wijesiri to leave the chambers under standing orders. Though, it was earlier believed that Mr Wijesiri had been barred from taking further part in the day's proceedings, it was later clarified by the chair that the Speaker had only ejected the MP for that particular incident and he was permitted back to the chamber to take part in the Committee Stage debate of the budget. Mr Wijesiri went onto speak today during the first day of the Committee Stage debate.
The incident occurred when the SJB MP protested against a statement made by MP Lanza, who is sitting with the opposition as an independent. Mr Wijesiri alleged that Mr Lanza was making statements in support of the government using the time allocated to him by the opposition.
Both Leader of the House Minister Susil Premajayantha and Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena called on the Speaker to eject Mr Wijesiri from the chambers for his unparliamentary conduct.
