Sri Lanka’s stadiums and all other playgrounds which are under the purview of the Sports Ministry, Urban Councils and Pradeshiya Sabhas are to be developed and maintained under Public Private Partnership (PPP), according to a cabinet memorandum.
The relevant Cabinet memorandum is to be presented at today’s (Monday) Cabinet meeting seeking its approval to hand over these playgrounds to private investors to modernise and maintain it for the improvement of local sports.
This initiative involves all main stadiums being maintained under the purview of the Sports Ministry and Department of Sports and all other playgrounds of local government institutions, district stadiums, and Urban Council grounds, Pradeshiya Sabhas, government and semi government institutions.
Almost all these grounds are poorly maintained and many of it are in an unsuitable condition for sport events, the cabinet memorandum pointed out.
Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium has been empowered to implement this initiative in accordance with a self-financing business model entering into agreements with private investors following proper procedure in a transparent manner. (BS)
