The Natural Hazards Early Warning Center has issued a severe lightning advisory for the evening of November 5, 2024.
Residents in the Western, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, and North-Western provinces are urged to stay vigilant as thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected to impact these areas.
Temporary, localized strong winds may accompany these storms, adding to the potential risks. The public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the likelihood of lightning-related damage.
The Department of Meteorology recommends the following safety measures:
- Seek shelter indoors and avoid taking cover under trees.
- Stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations, and water bodies during thunderstorms.
- Refrain from using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms.
- Avoid open vehicles, such as bicycles, tractors, and boats.
- Be cautious of fallen trees and power lines.
For emergency assistance, residents are encouraged to contact their local disaster management authorities.
