The Metrology Department’s natural hazards early warning center issued an advisory for severe lightning today.
According to the advisory, thunderstorms accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several places in Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and in Kalutara and Kurunegala districts.
The department also warned of temporary localized strong winds during thunderstorms and called the general public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity.
The Department of Meteorology advised that people should Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees. Evade open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations and open water bodies during thunderstorms. Avoid using wired telephones and connected electric appliances during thunderstorms. Avoid using open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats. Apart from that the general public is also alert of fallen trees and power lines.
