Speaker to step down
Speaker Ashoka Ranawala whose educational qualifications have been questioned has decided to step down from the post of Speaker.
The Speaker, however in a statement said that he has not made any false statement about his qualifications, but would need time to submit proof about his qualifications. He said that he is not in possession of the relevant documents currently and is not in a position to submit the documents immediately.
He said that he had obtained his doctorate from an affiliated institute of the University of Waseda in Japan and is in a position to obtain the relevant educational certificates. He said he hopes to submits the documents soon as possible.
'However, taking into consideration the current situation and to prevent any inconvenience to the public who placed trust in our government I have decided to to resign from the post of Speaker', Mr Ranwala said in the statement
