The Finance Ministry has imposed a special commodity levy on several imported items which it has considered non-essential items including grapes, apples, oranges, dates and yoghurt.
A special commodity levy of Rs. 1,000 per kg has been imposed on yoghurt, butter and spreads manufactured using milk.
A special commodity levy of Rs. 400 per kg has been enforced on all varieties of cheese while a levy of Rs. 200 per kg is applicable on dates (dried and fresh), oranges, grapes (dried and fresh), apples and other imported fruits.
This special levy will be effective continuously for a period of six months from March 10, 2022. Accordingly, the prices of these imported items are expected to increase with the new levy. (Bandula)
