Sri Lanka celebrated the 53rd World Environment Day today, June 5, 2025, at Nidahas Mawatha in Kegalle, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The Ministry of Environment has declared Environment Week to coincide with the celebrations of World Environment Day, assigning a different theme to each day and today, under the theme “Let it Sprout,” Sri Lanka is marking World Environment Day with the participation of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Minister of Environment Dammika Patabendi, and other local dignitaries.
In line with this theme, a tree-planting program and several other significant initiatives were held today in Kegalle, organized by the Ministry of Environment.
These included the declaration of the habitat of the Bandula Pethiya as a sanctuary, the presentation of four new gazette notifications on the declaration of reserves including the gazette on the Nilgala Reserve, conversion of three schools into eco-friendly model schools, evaluation of green railway stations, and the presentation of certificates recognizing the 2025 World Environment Day National Program as a carbon-neutral event.
Sri Lanka’s “National Environment Week” began on May 30 and concluded today, June 5, 2025, addressing various environmental issues throughout the week, with a different theme each day.
It commenced on May 30 with Plastic Waste Management Day, followed by Reduce Air Pollution and Its Negative Effects Day, Environmental Cleanliness Awareness Day, Biodiversity Conservation Day, Environment Cleanup Day, and Sustainable Land Management Day, and concluded today with the theme Plantation and the National Celebration of World Environment Day.
Today, the world marked World Environment Day, hosted by the Republic of South Korea, under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.”
