A wanted suspect who had allegedly acted as a gunman in several shooting incidents and multiple armed robberies has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last night after being deported from India.
The 31-year-old suspect, a resident of Weligama, was arrested at the airport by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department's (CID) airport unit.
According to a press release issued by the Police Media Unit, the suspect is connected to at least 13, mostly violent crimes, including murder and armed robbery. Police said he had been identified as the main gunman involved in the fatal shooting of a person using a T56 weapon at Hirana on April 29, 2025. He is also connected to the shooting death of a person in the Mattakkuliya area on June 5, 2025. The victim was shot dead by two gunman using a T56 assault rifle and a 9mm pistol. Police have identified as the suspect as the gunman who used the T56 firearm in the shooting.
The suspect was further wanted in connecting with a shooting at a motorcycle spare parts shop in Panadura South on June 29, 2025 using a T56 weapon, where one person was injured.
He is also wanted in connection with multiple robberies of gold jewelry and the theft of motorcycles.
The suspect has been handed over to the Kalutara Crime Investigation Bureau for further investigations.
